Fort Myers Beach is buzzing with excitement as a beloved institution, Smokin' Oyster Brewery (SOB), has officially marked its grand re-opening. While the popular dive bar and restaurant quietly welcomed back patrons in December 2024, a recent, more public celebration on May 16 truly cemented its return and offered a heartfelt thank you to the resilient Fort Myers Beach community.
SOB, a long-standing favorite on Old San Carlos Boulevard, faced immense devastation from Hurricane Ian in 2022. The storm surge sent water levels far above the rafters, submerging and ruining everything inside. However, the structure itself remained intact, paving the way for an extensive rebuilding and remodeling effort.
Under new ownership by the Freeland family, who also own Moss Marina, Smokin' Oyster Brewery has been painstakingly brought back to life. Hank Leitnaker, the new operating partner, has emphasized a commitment to bringing back the familiar favorites that loyal customers craved, including much of the original menu. While the space boasts a fresh look, efforts were made to retain the essence of the beloved "classiest dive bar."
The community's anticipation for SOB's return was palpable throughout the rebuilding process. Leitnaker noted how groups of five or six people would visit daily, eagerly asking about the reopening and sharing their fond memories of the establishment. The grand reopening ceremony in May was a testament to this enduring affection, drawing a crowd eager to celebrate this significant milestone in Fort Myers Beach's ongoing recovery.
Looking ahead, Smokin' Oyster Brewery has even bigger plans. Leitnaker revealed intentions to add a second level, envisioning a Key West type of atmosphere." This expansion promises to further enhance the dining experience and solidify SOB's role as an iconic beacon of rebuilding and resilience on Fort Myers Beach. The return of Smokin' Oyster Brewery is more than just a restaurant opening; it's a powerful symbol of the island's unwavering spirit and determination to come back stronger than ever. I, along with many other SWFL residents and visitors, welcome them back with enthusiasm!
